This map is intended to provide a reference tool for those researching Hilton Head’s history, specifically relative to the plantations and the families that owned the land. The original map showing the pre-1861 plantations on Hilton Head has long been a primary source of information as to plantation locations. The boundaries of the named plantations changed configuration from time to time as lands were acquired or sold, and plantation names also may have changed with ownership. This is an annotated version indicating the landowning family and/or plantation names during the Colonial, Revolutionary War, and Antebellum periods.
