Why Do Your Historical Research at the Heritage Library

Researchers from across the country come to the Heritage Library for its breadth of material and the knowledgeable help they receive from our volunteers. Much of this material – especially about Hilton Head history -- is not readily available from other sources. The Beaufort County Library frequently refers researchers to the library to access material not included in that library’s mission.

Collections include census data pertaining to Hilton Head from both the Federal government and the useful census data collected by the State of South Carolina immediately following the Civil War.

A continually-growing collection includes histories of the plantations that existed on the island, and such ongoing projects as indexing maps, land certificates and indentures, and the collection of material on Colored Troops from pension and other records.

Our volunteers find such projects to be satisfying and rewarding work.

Our facilities for members include computers with access to subscription sites Ancestry.com, Footnote.com, HeritageQuest, and Genealogy.com. Also available are printers and microfilm readers.
